Doctors and veterinarians are keeping a close watch on a newborn gorilla who underwent surgery just two days after her birth.
The 4.6-pound female was born by a rare cesarean section Wednesday, but had difficulty breathing. A medical team performed an operation Friday morning to repair a collapsed lung, which the park said likely occurred during the C-section.
According to a post on the San Diego Zoo Safari Park's Instagram account, the newborn is in "guarded condition and receiving constant care."
The medical team included veterinarians and two doctors who usually work on human patients: a neonatal specialist and an anesthesiologist.
