Retired Rear Adm. Garry Bonelli is the newest member of the Port of San Diego Board of Commissioners, representing Coronado.

Bonelli took the oath of office Friday, and joins a panel that sets policy for San Diego Bay and the adjacent shoreline. The board's seven members represent Chula Vista, Coronado, Imperial Beach, National City and San Diego.

"Port Commissioner Bonelli brings a unique skill set to the board with command experience in the SEAL community, along with public policy leadership and a distinguished civilian professional career," said Ann Moore, the board chairwoman.

He replaces retired Adm. Lou Smith, who decided not to seek re-appointment.

Bonelli's 45-year Navy career, which ended last year, included active duty, the reserves and serving at the Navy's Special Warfare Command in Coronado.

He has also held executive positions at the San Diego Association of Governments and San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce.
