The San Diego County Republican Party is trying to step up its game. One of its first steps is appointing a new executive director.
Francis Barraza, the newly-appointed director, lists building community relations as one of her top goals.
The party’s message did not resonate with minority voters in the recent San Diego mayoral election.
Barraza realizes that and plans to take an aggressive approach to drawing more people into the party. She said that includes doing away with the practice of scaling back operations during an “off political year."
“Instead of dialing back, I really want to ramp up our efforts,” she said. “Instead of focusing on one particular candidate and getting our candidates elected, we’re trying to bring more people into the party and create a good infrastructure for us to be able to use once election time comes.”
Barraza was previously the finance director for the local GOP. She said she’ll also work to get communications up to date, including revamping the party's website.
