California Governor Jerry Brown has turned in the signatures needed to get his proposed tax initiative on the November ballot.
He personally delivered Sacramento County petitions Thursday.
Brown’s campaign submitted approximately one-and-a-half million signatures statewide.
The measure will raise income taxes on the wealthiest Californians for seven years and increase the sales tax a quarter cent for four years.
Brown said passing his tax proposal is crucial to balancing the budget:
“With this tax measure and with the cuts that I’ll be proposing on Monday, California will put itself in a very, very strong position.”
Next week Governor Brown will present his revised budget proposal. He isn’t providing the details, but said Monday will be a difficult day in Sacramento.
Now that the initiative signatures have been turned in, state and county elections officials will start the certification process to see if it qualifies for the November ballot.
