Theater Critics Nominate Best In Local Theater

The band of local theater critics who keep us abreast of what's good and bad have nominated the year's best in San Diego theater.

Multiple nominations go to a handful of productions, including The Old Globe's "August: Osage County" (Culture Lust radio story on "August"), Cygnet's "Cabaret" (CL story on the costume design) and San Diego REPertory Theatre's "The Who's Tommy" (Midday Edition coverage here, interview with lead actor B. Slade here). See the full list of nominees below.

I'm thrilled to see Miles Anderson nominated for outstanding male leading performance for "The Tempest" and Robert Foxworth for San Diego Rep's "Superior Donuts."

Lois Markle gets a well-deserved nod for her performance in "August: Osage County."

Seems like the nominees for outstanding touring production will be a showdown between "Next to Normal" and "Jesus Christ Superstar." Is "Shrek: The Musical" really going to steal it from one of these hard rockin' musicals?

Here's my other observation about this list: there's a ton of good theater in this town and not enough time! There are so many productions on this list I didn't have time to see and that bums me out. New Year's resolution for all San Diegans: see more live theater!

The 10th annual Craig Noel Awards take place from 6-10pm on February 6th at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego in La Jolla
