Los Angeles artist Charlie White, a photographer and filmmaker, is a master of unease - of the strange yet familiar. His 2008 series "The Girl Studies" explores the experience of being a teenage girl today, and looks at how that experience is often depicted. I was thrilled to hear his work will be part of a new exhibit opening at the SDSU University Art Gallery on September 20th.
That exhibit is called “She: In Her Teens and Twenties” and explores the complex physical, emotional and psychological lives of young women in the US. I'm so excited about this show. It's curated by Tina Yapelli, and features work by artists Jen Davis (her work is so compelling), Laurel Nakadate, and Lise Sarfati.
Below is an excerpt from Charlie White's animated film (part of a series) called "OMG BFF LOL (Mall)." It's both hilarious and disturbing.
