The third nuclear-powered aircraft carrier to be assigned San Diego as its home port has left the east coast.

The U.S.S. Carl Vinson has begun its journey from Newport Virginia to San Diego, where she will have a new dock at North Island, next to the U.S.S. Ronald Reagan and the U.S.S. Nimitz.

The vessel has been in Newport News for the past four years, being refurbished.

Captain Bruce Lindsay spoke from the ship by phone while leaving port.

“We first have to get around South America,” Lindsay said. “that’s the shortest way to get there. And we need some time at sea since we’ve been in the shipyard for so long, so we need to train ourselves out at sea. We’ll be there in the April time frame.”

He said the Carl Vinson is carrying a crew of nearly 3,000 sailors, mostly 19 and 20 years old.

"I have over two-thirds of the crew have never been deployed before," Lindsay said. "We want to be good community neighbors with the people of Coronado, the people of San Diego and of course we’ll have lots of sailors living all the way from Temecula all the way down to the border there."

The aircraft carrier is expected to add 6,000 jobs to San Diego’s economy.

The U.S.S. Carl Vinson's arrival is part of a Department of Defense strategy to bring more U.S. naval forces to the west coast.
