Seven more Tijuana policemen have been detained for their alleged ties to organized crime. Authorities say the arrests stem from the interrogation of an ex-policeman who was picked up last week.
Federal authorities say they detained the seven officers for their alleged ties to the ex-Tijuana policeman.
The former officer, nicknamed "El Gil" supposedly led more than ten kidnap and murder crews for a Tijuana drug boss known as "El Teo."
Authorities say "El Gil" murdered Tijuana police officers and was also behind plots to kill Tijuana's Police Chief Julian Leyzaola.
Leyzaola says previous investigations raised suspicions about the seven officers, but authorities waited until they felt like they had solid information. "Sometimes criminals will finger a good cop because criminals want the cop out. Authorities were more cautious in these cases because of that," says Leyzaola.
Two of the officers are Leyzaola's bodyguards. The group also includes a supervisor and a chief.
