Chula Vista Councilman Steve Castaneda was indicted on 15 charges today. Castaneda plead not guilty. KPBS reporter Nicole Lozare has more.
Castaneda faces 13 charges of perjury from filing false affidavits to lying before the grand jury . He also faces two counts of failing to disclose income on a statement of economic interests.
According to the indictment, the bulk of the charges stem from an apartment the councilman rented in Chula Vista in 2006.
Prosecutor Patrick O' Toole is the head of the District Attorney's Public Integrity Unit.
O' Toole : What it boils down to is the San Diego's District Attorney's Office, along with the grand jury, was investigating whether he lived in the complex, the circumstances under which he lived in the complex, and, frankly, whether he was getting special deals, special treatments in violation of the law.
Castaneda says he is innocent. He accuses the district attorney's office of coming after him for political reasons.
