San Diego State University researchers found harmful viruses in ocean waters along the county’s southern coast.
SDSU researcher Rick Gersberg says he tested ocean water at the mouth of the Tijuana River and at the Imperial Beach Pier during wet and dry seasons. He discovered Hepatitis A and enteroviruses in the water after rainy periods. Gersberg says the viruses turned up when the waters were identified as polluted.
Rick Gersberg : It gives cause for perhaps a little more alarm, I don’t think a lot more. But it also reassures at the same time, because the system works.
Gersberg says viruses present during the rainy season disappeared during dry spells.
