COUNTY OF SAN DIEGO DOMESTIC VIOLENCE FATALITY REVIEW TEAM 2004 REPORT

The mission of the San Diego Domestic Violence Fatality Review Team (DVFRT) is to prevent future deaths from intimate relationship violence by utilizing a systematic, confidential, multi-agency death review process, and to identify system gaps in order to expand effective violence prevention policy and coordinated strategies.  The content of the team’s report is based on the information obtained since the inception of the team in 1996. A total of 61 cases are chronicled in this DVFRT report, compiled in 2004

QUICK FACTS:
According to the most recent report available from the San Diego Association of Governments, Crime in the San Diego Region Annual 2004 Report, there were approximately two domestic violence incidents reported to law enforcement each hour of every day.

Out of the 61 cases examined by the DVFRT, there were 52 children within the families affected by the death of one or both of their parents. Thirty-nine (64%) of the cases had at least one minor child. Twelve (23%) of the 52 children witnessed the murder of their parent(s).
Four (8%) of the children were the first ones to find the victim’s body.

FAMILY VIOLENCE PREVENTION FUND: THE FACTS ON CHILDREN AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

Women who are battered often go to extreme and courageous lengths to protect their children from an abusive partner. In fact, research has shown that the non-abusing parent is often the strongest protective factor in the lives of children who witness domestic violence. However, growing up in a violent home may be a terrifying and traumatic experience that can affect every aspect of a child’s life, growth, and development.
